Curing a troublesome engine bay leak
Cure for a troublesome leak in the engine bay
Dave Smith took his boat ‘Double Dutch’ out for the day from her mooring at Tewkesbury Marina when an unlucky knock of the propeller on submerged debris caused the transom to shift and damaged the propeller itself. Worse still the engine bay started taking on water as a result of an un-identified leak.

As part of the requirement for his insurance claim Dave called ELITE Marine Services to take a look at his boat and provide an estimate for repairing the damage and identify the source of the leak.

Lee Daniel, Managing Director comments on the damage, “It’s easy to ground a boat on unknown low areas of a riverbed. The water level was half way up the engine bay which could have caused the boat to sink.”
Once Dave gave ELITE Marine Services the go ahead , the first job was to strip down the stern drive and transom. The transom was resealed and the leak, which was as a result of the internal shift within the mechanism was identified and rectified. The propeller was repaired and replaced.

The repairs to ‘Double Dutch’ were all carried out on dry dock so once completed the next task was to put the boat back in the water to see whether any water was still finding its way into the engine bay.
After a weekend on a mooring close to the crane Dave was delighted to find ‘Double Dutch still very much afloat and ready to return to her normal berth. “I’m really pleased with how ELITE Marine Services managed to get my boat back into the water. From my initial enquiry Lee promptly sent me through the estimate for work and remained in close contact for the duration of the job. The guys at ELITE carried out the repairs to Double Dutch professionally and provided me with supporting photographs for my insurance claim.”

Dave adds, “Lee also came down over the weekend to check on my boat when she was put back into the water - that gave me great confidence that was dealing with a company that actually cares about my boat. I’ll happily provide a reference to anyone thinking about using ELITE Marine Services.”
